It was with Zee TV’s Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa in 1995 that singer Sonu Niigaam became a household name as a TV host. His charm combined with his singing talent ensured that he catapulted to instant fame and recognition.

And now, 17 years later, the singer is set to return to Zee TV and will be seen hosting the Zee Rishtey Awards 2012 that also marks the channel’s 20-year celebrations.

A source reveals that given his busy schedule, the creative team at Zee was a tad apprehensive about approaching Sonu to host the annual awards. “However when they spoke to him, Sonu gave an instant nod much to their delight,” says the source.

“Even while preparing for it, Sonu went out of his way to ensure that the segments he was hosting at the awards ceremony are lively and entertaining. Not only did he actively involve himself with the writing and improvising of his script as the anchor, but even composed and sang an original song that pays a tribute to Zee’s 20 years. His wife, Madhurima, designed his look as the host to compliment his rockstar image and he made a stylish entry on a bike,” the insider adds about the event that is slated to air on December 2 at 8 pm on Zee TV.

Revealing more about the event, the insider says, “Sonu had the audience in splits as he learned a Bhojpuri item song from Zee TV’s Bihari girl Laali (Ratan Rajput). It was only after the awards ceremony was over that he revealed that his mother wasn’t keeping well and that he had to miss the after-party to attend to her. We were very touched by Sonu’s single-minded focus and professional dedication towards making his segments of the awards a grand success, despite his mother’s health issues.”

Talking about his association with Zee and hosting the awards, Sonu shares, “You can never thank the one who gives you your first break enough. My association with Zee TV over the years has been extremely rewarding. So, when the team approached me to return as a host for Zee Rishtey Awards, I looked at it as a way of saying a heartfelt thanks to the channel.”
