Riteish Deshmukh takes a break from adult comedies post Grand Masti success.
Grand Masti is closing in on the Rs100-crore mark and Riteish Deshmukh is riding high on it. It’s his sixth super hit film in a row after Housefull (2010), Double Dhamaal (2011), Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya (2012), Housefull 2 (2012) and Kya Superkool Hai Hum (2012). Right now he is shooting for Sajid Khan’s Humshakals in London. He will be seen in a triple role for the first time. Here he talks about his films, friends and more...
Did you expect GM to be such a big hit?
No. I thought Grand Masti would be a successful film and would open well but I never thought it would take such a start at the BO and sustain so well throughout the week. I don’t think anyone in the trade anticipated such collections. Only Indra Kumar predicted we would have such huge collections but I thought he was just biased. GM has become the highest grosser for an adult certificate film. There are restrictions for such films as under-18 year audience don’t come to the theatre and that revenue is lost but for GM, I think above-18 have compensated more than enough for the under-18 ones (laughs).
Did you have to be convinced to do this film?
I was absolutely shocked when I first read the script. My first reaction was, ‘I am definitely not doing this film. I did this film for Induji as I love and respect him. He has given me four hits in a row — Masti, Dhamaal, Double Dhamaal and now GM being the biggest — so I am not complaining.
Are you planning to stay away from sex comedies now?
Yes adult comedies are uncomfortable for me to do. They are not easy to perform. I am looking forward to doing other genres. Right now adult comedies don’t excite me.
Has Genelia (his wife) liked it?
Genelia and me are going to catch the film soon in London. An off-day from the shoot of Humshakals would do the trick.
You have given six hits in a row and yet always underplayed your success. Why?
I just don’t know any other way to do it. Tomorrow it may be seven hits in a row and I will still be the same. Success is not in my hands — but hard work is. As an architect I learned for a structure to stand tall, your foundation should be strong. Too many bricks have been thrown at me, now it’s time for me to build my mansion.
Lets talk about Humshakals.
Saif, Bipasha, Tamannah, Esha, and Ram Kapoor — I am working with all of them for the first time and enjoying every day of shoot with them. Saif is inherently very cool and has a great sense of humour. I think Sajid Khan is making us both do something that we have never done before and it’s funny as hell!
You are doing a triple role for the first time.
Yes. It is confusing at times which character I am playing but with time the adjustment gets better. Switching between the three is the challenging part. All my characters will look exactly the same but behave differently.
