Telugu film director Kodi Ramakrishna no more

After reports emerged on Thursday that renowned Telugu filmmaker Kodi Ramakrishna has been admitted to the AIG Hospital at Gachibowli in Hyderabad in a critical condition, Friday afternoon greeted Telugu film lovers with the news of his death. Soon after, social media was flooded with condolence messages – from both people from the film industry and the general public – for the director who is considered to be a revolutionary for Telugu cinema, being ahead of his times.
Hailing from Palakollu, Kodi Ramakrishna continued his film journey for over three decades. Ramakrishna, who was recognized by his signature bandanna that he was always seen donning, stood apart in the Telugu film industry because of his experimental nature when it came to his work. Being one of the first to dabble in various genres, he directed dramas, social films and spy flicks alongside being the first to venture into the graphics arena with various supernatural and fantasy flicks.
Notable amidst his works are Ankusham (1989), Bharath Bandh (1991) – Chiranjeevi’s first film to run for 365 days in the screens, Maa Avida Collector, Pelli, Devi (1999), Mangammagari Manavadu (1984), Intlo Ramayya Veedilo Krishnayya (1982), Devi Putrudu (2001), Anji (2004) and Arundhati (2009) among several others.

Other than helming over 100 Telugu films, Kodi Ramakrishna has also worked on films in other languages like Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. His last release was the 2016 Kannada film Nagarahavu. However, his last hit was Baahubali actor Anushka Shetty’s Arundhati which made the actress a name to reckon with and also was the foundation stone to make her the star that she is known to be today.
