A source says that the actor was actually supposed to play another character, that of Saleem, in BBC’s adaptation of the same novel that was being planned almost 15 years ago.

According to the source, Rahul had auditioned for the role of Saleem in front of Rushdie way back in 1997. “Rushdie loved his performance so much that he signed him to play the lead role of Saleem in a documentary-styled film series. Rushdie had planned the novel to be made into a five-film series with BBC. However, due to some unavoidable reasons, the film had to be called off. But now interestingly, Rahul is once again associated with the novel though playing a different role,” says the source.
