Actor Priyanka Chopra is taking her role of a philanthropist quite seriously. After lending her support to causes that are close to her heart, she’s taken up another one recently —  that of educating a girl child in India.

Joining hands with WAVE, an organisation that works for women against violence, Priyanka got together with entrepreneurs Ashi Dua and Aliya Rashid to help raise money for educating the girl child.

Elaborating on the issue, she says, “Education is the most important thing for an individual — not just formal education acquired at schools and colleges. Even if you teach someone to be self-reliant by teaching them a skill — like sewing or crafting, it is enough. But yes, sending a girl to school is the best possible thing to do. And if you can’t, then at least teach her a way to fend for herself,” the actress asserts.

Priyanka also feels that as a celebrity, it is doubly necessary to address issues of social concern.

“Being a known face is, definitely, a plus point. As actors, we have a fan following and if you can put that to good use to garner support for a cause, then why not? In fact, I think more public figures should be out there, standing up for causes they believe in.”

About her role in teaming up with the organisation, she elaborates, “I shall be performing at the concert that is being organised in the near future. I am an actor and a performer, and I know how to do just that. As an entertainer, I will do what I can in my capacity, and that is to entertain all of you!”

The actor is all for gender equality and thinks that boys and girls both should be given their fair share of opportunities for education.

“Ram padhai kar, Sita paani la’ is something that’s still being taught in the primary schools in the country.  It goes a long way in creating a mindset that advocates boys should be educated as they are the breadearners, while education is not important for girls and should be relegated to household chores. This kind of mindset needs to change and harp on how important the education of the girl child is.”
