If the sets at Sagar Sun City, Baroda are anything to go by, the latest venture of Sagar Arts Productions’ Prithviraj Chauhan-Dharti Ka Veer Yodha will indeed be an impressive one.

The production house  has apparently spent Rs 4 and a half crore for only the palace set. The other sets include a man-made dessert and a lake. The series will trace the life and times of the last king of Delhi, Prithviraj Chauhan. The show which was in the pipeline for several years will finally air next month on Star Plus.

"This was Dr Ramanand Sagar’s (of Ramayana fame) dream. We wanted to launch the project on an international scale in the 90s. But it got shelved. We are glad that we are finally making this historical epic,” says producer Prem Sagar. Of the legendary ruler Prithviraj, Prem says, “He was the greatest bhoomiputra (son of the soil) in India. We need to tell our kids about this hero.”

Prem reveals that Oomang Kumar who had done the sets for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black has been roped in for Prithviraj. “It took him 200 people and two months to create original paintings  for the palace,” he adds.

Apart from Jas Arora who will play Someshwar (Prithviraj Chauhan’s father); the other actors include Milind Gunaji and Nirmal Pandey. “To play the lead character we decided to cast Angad Bedi, son of former cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi. We are training him in acting and voice modulation. Angad’s body structure and subtle chemistry is brilliant,” reveals Prem.

When contacted, Angad admits that he is playing the role of Prithviraj. “I have signed an exclusive contract with Sagar Arts and am excited about the project,” he says. Angad, who has been representing Delhi in cricket for the last eight years says, “I have walked the ramp for friends and have also got some film offers. But I wanted to work in a project which revolves around me. I thrive on that challenge,” he adds.

The actor who has also worked in Seema Biswas’ film Kaya Taran, adds, “I have weighed all the pros and cons. Prithviraj will be a stylized show. I know that Ajay Devgan and Sunny Deol will be playing Prithviraj Chauhan in two historical films which will be releasing in June. My character will also make an entry around that time. I am new and I want people to notice me,” he says.
