But the four remaining members stayed together and continued to enjoy chart success - and singer Shane Filan is adamant a break-up is not on the horizon.
"It just doesn't appeal to us. We are happy the way we are. We enjoy making our music, touring and performing. There are four of us in the band and nobody has any plans to go out alone," the Daily Express quoted Filan as telling Sunday Mirror.
Bandmate Kian Egan also added, "We won't be doing this when we're 60 years old but for now we're happy in all areas of our career in Westlife."
