From playing a boho-chic casually attired mum in Paa to being the raunchy femme fatale in Ishqiya and now from playing a de-glam bespectacled Sabrina Lal to preparing to get into the stilettoes of South sex siren Silk Smitha, Vidya Balan seems to have mastered the art of yo-yoing between deglam roles to the absolute sexy ones.

“It comes easy,” explains the actor who’s enjoying the element of surprise she manages to pack in each film. “Going de-glam requires you to play yourself physically in terms of dressing down a bit, while playing sexy requires you to be yourself mentally,” says Balan. As for what she finds easier, she adds, “Playing sexy of course! I get to be myself na,” she winks.

A dekko at her line-up starting with her forthcoming film starring Rani Mukherjee, followed by Kahani, her Silk Smita biopic and also the special cameos she has done in Dum Maaro Dum and the sword-wielding item number in Santosh Sivan’s Urumi, it’s hard not to miss that they all seem to have strong women-centric storylines. Point this out, but Vidya’s quick to clarify that it’s co-incidence. “I am all for entertainers, tear-jerkers, thrillers, action, comedy, drama…anything as long as the role interests me. In fact, I’m really keen to do comedies,” she says. “But I’m glad that film-makers have the faith in me that I can portray such strong women-oriented roles. It’s not everyday that we get to see such strong characters on screen and I’m not complaining about getting to play them.”

With an impressive line-up to boast of, it’s little wonder then that the actor’s in a mood for celebration this season and can’t wait for the next year to begin. And Balan reveals that though she’s not planned anything to bring in the New Year yet, she is “planning to party really hard with friends and family.” “The year’s been a good one, and I’m already excited about what the next year has in store for me,” she enthuses. And she’s not only referring to work here.

“Yes, love-wise too, I hope the year turns out to be a special one. Although, with my hectic schedules I don’t see a possibility of me getting active on the dating scene any time soon, so someone will just have to sweep me off my feet,” she laughs.

So, is love high on her New Year wish-list? “Why only this year, it’s always been high on my wish-list. Keeping my fingers crossed for this year though,” she smiles.
