Capaldi will part ways with the show along with current showrunner Steven Moffat who will hand over the reins to Chris Chibnall. Chibnall is well-known for his show Broadchruch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman.

In 2014, Matt Smith's Doctor regenerated into Peter Capaldi's avatar at the beginning of the eighth season.

Doctor Who chronicles the adventures of the Time Lord and his (mostly) human companion, who travels through space and time in his TARDIS, a vehicle shaped like a blue, telephone booth-like police-box.

No announcements have been made regarding the replacement of Peter Capaldi, who will accompany the new companion, Pearl Mackie.

The latest season of Doctor Who will begin on April 15.
