Deepika trades her 'fun' roles for more sober and sensible ones...
Most of Deepika Padukone's films in recent years (Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail, Break Ke Baad) have shown her drinking and clubbing. She has portrayed maximum characters of modern, independent, light-hearted, fun, commitment-phobic role, earning her the tag of Party daru desi Girl. Even her item song — Dum Maaro Dum — a remixed version of Zeenat Aman's iconic song, had raunchy lyrics and suggestive movements, again reiterating the stereotype. Her personal life, when she began her career, too seemed like a roller coaster with new link-ups every few days. But the actress is ready to shed the tag, with her next few releases.
Role Play
In Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, she plays Naina Talwar who is a simple, good-natured and focused girl, and wants to become a doctor. Her character in the film is strong and dependable and stands for rooted family values. Apart from Yeh Jawaani... with Ranbir Kapoor, she has Chennai Express with Shah Rukh Khan in which she is a simple South Indian girl. Deepika is doing Ram Leela with Ranveer Singh in which she plays Juliet and Kochadaiyaan with Rajinikanth where she portrays the character of a princess.
Conscious effort
Deepika has conciously moved away from playing just glamour-oriented roles. She is keen to be seen in characters that have layers and emotional intensity. She has been steadily improving in her craft and has been rejecting shallow roles. Even in her personal life, she is more rooted after her break-up with Sidharth Mallya, who was more of a relationship on the rebound. Her intense relationship with Ranbir and the subsequent break-up helped her grow as a person and, also as an actor. In Ram Leela again she plays an intense character and has a pivotal role in the film, and is currently dating her hero Ranveer Singh.
The year ahead
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, "Deepika has become serious about her roles. Even in a film like Cocktail, you could make out that the star had transformed into an actress. She's doing the balancing act very well. On one hand, she has Chennai Express with Rohit Shetty, who's known for masala entertainers and on the other hand, YJHD and Ram Leela with directors known for making serious films. I feel, the year will witness Deepika in varied avatars in Chennai Express, YJHD and Rajinikanth's film. The year belongs to her!"
