Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures had previously come to an agreement to share the character of Spider-Man. The webslinger will make an appearance in Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Civil War and some of the heroes will return the favour, reported Entertainment Weekly.

"He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said. He seemed to decline specifying which characters would pop up in the July 7, 2017 film.

It's unlikely that Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man and Chris Evans' Captain America would make cameos because the actors are only in contract for Civil War and two other Avengers movies.

However, Joe Russo, who directed Civil War with brother Anthony Russo, gave a hint. "Let's just say ... Great Lakes Avengers," he said.
