'Mulan' live-action reboot finally gets a director
Niki Caro of 'North Country' will take charge of Disney movie
Filmmaker Niki Caro has been roped in to direct the Disney's live-action reboot of Mulan.
The movie is inspired by Hua Mulan, the Chinese folk heroine who took her aged father's place in battle, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Hong Kong movie mogul Bill Kong will serve as executive producer.
The new Mulan features a script originally penned by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, and rewritten by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
The film is slated to hit theaters in November 2018.
Another studio, Sony, is also developing a live-action adaptation based on the same Chinese ballad. The studio is looking for an Asian director for the project which is expected to feature a predominantly Asian cast. Though it is said to be in very early development, Mirror Mirror scribe Jason Keller is already on board to pen the script for the movie.
Mulan revolves around a young woman, who disguises herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army and go to war. With the help of her trusty dragon sidekick Mushu, she becomes a skilled warrior and, eventually, one of the country's greatest heroines.
