In an interview with a leading digital platform, he said that he had put in a lot of energy between 2016 and 2018 for the exam but couldn’t clear the prelims. He further added,  "Possibly because my strategy was wrong and I had become arrogant that if I can clear IIT-Delhi and I can get through any exam."

After failing the first attempt, Anil did not lose hope, instead, he gathered himself and attempted the UPSC exam for the second time where he got through secured 616th rank in IRS.

Even though he had cleared the exam in his second attempt, he wasn't fully satisfied and fortunately in his third attempt, Anil secured the 45th rank in the UPSC 2020 results and wishes to serve the Bihar cadre.

Anil came from a middle-class family with one elder brother and two younger brothers. While his elder brother is working as a professional, his younger brothers are still studying. His mother, Manju Devi is a homemaker and his father, Binod Basak did odd jobs to manage the expenses of the family. The family initially stayed at a rented and later on managed to a kutcha house which they later turned to a pucca house.
