Dixit may be B-Town’s yum mum, but the actor reveals that she’s never been the kinds to starve herself to maintain her figure. On the contrary she admits to being a hard-core foodie. In fact it was this love for food that made her agree to host a food based TV show (The Food Food Maha Challenge) too. “I simply love food and am always open to trying different cuisines all over the world.”

Talking about her fitness mantra Dixit adds that she’s always believed that more than not eating, maintaining a fit figure is all to do with healthy eating. “So for me it’s always been walking that fine line between indulging in good tasty food and not going overboard keeping health in mind.” And just like her, her two sons are absolute foodies too, as is hubby Sriram Nene. “Yes, Ram’s an absolute foodie and so are Arin and Ryan. In fact Ram’s even a better cook than me,” she laughs.

Favourite cuisines
Just like Dixit  has always believed in exploring different genres on screen, when it comes to food, she says she’s just as experimental in the kitchen too. “I enjoy Thai and Italian. But Indian food is an all time favourite. No other food in the world offers as much variety. Right from the East to the West the North and the South each region has such unique food. And some of them have blended so well into other cultures. So I enjoy the idli-dosas as much as I enjoy a vada pav or kande pohe, which is my favourite,” she adds.

Soul food
“No matter how hard I try, I can’t get the same taste in my food as my mom does. For me she’s the best cook in the world and I think that her magic ingredient is love and it adds that special taste to whatever she prepares,” says Dixit  adding that her mom’s food is soul food for her. “Even plain dal-chawal taste yum when she prepares it. That’s one of the biggest draws for me to keep coming home,” she laughs.

Cooking mantra
Chicken tikka masala, says Dixit is her speciality, as is kande pohe. “Kande pohe was one of the earliest things I’d learned to prepare,” she says. “But otherwise I started cooking only after marriage,” reveals Dixit.

“I used to be out shooting for most of the time so I hardly got to try my culinary skills in the kitchen before marriage. So when I started cooking it would be super-stressful for me. But now for me cooking is the best stress-buster,” she adds. While she believes that women cook better, she does admit that her hubby’s a better cook. “But that’s because he has been cooking for years before I started,” she laughs.

Health check
“Indian food is usually loaded with ghee and masalas, but these foods were fine back when people would do more physical work. But today we need to opt for healthier food simply because of the lifestyles that we lead,” says Dixit. Stressing on the need for eating healthy she reveals that not only she but her kids are health conscious too. “They are kind of aware of their calorie intake and avoid fried foods. I think it’s important to inculcate these healthy eating habits in them early on,” adds Dixit.

Pure indulgence
“I don’t think that you really need to compromise on taste to eat healthy,” says Dixit and admits that there are times when the taste buds do get the better of her family. “On days like that, we love to barbecue, which needs miminal oil. I think it’s healhty and tasty,” she says. “Anything is fine if done in moderation,” she adds. So she does have a pizza day or a burger day at home when the kids are allowed to binge on these foods. “But those are just once a week,” says Dixit.
