The iconic musician's guitar was bought at a charity auction in Brooklyn Wednesday night. The proceeds are earmarked for the Montgomery, Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center, reported Billboard.

The custom-made guitar was previously owned by musician and film director Daniel Pritzker. He originally bought it for USD 7,90,000 at Guernsey's auction house in 2002.

The auctioneer said Wolf first appeared in a 1973 New York performance the rock band gave for the Hells Angels.

Wolf was considered to be one of the most favourite guitars of Garcia, who died of a heart attack in August 1995 at the age of 53.
