You just need to Google her — Marilyn Vos Savant is listed in the Guinness World Records Hall Of Fame as the person having the highest Intelligent Quotient (IQ) in the world. When we got in touch with her, she revealed that as a child her parents were more concerned about earning a living than realising that they might have a genius in their family.

“My parents were immigrants from Germany and Italy, and they were more concerned with making a living. My parents were good people, but I was not an especially happy child. In particular, although it was clear that they loved me, they believed that intelligence would be mostly wasted on a girl, and they focused their attention on my two older brothers. I found this very irritating. I also found the restrictions of the classroom difficult to handle,” she says candidly in an email interview from New York.

Marilyn says she is absolutely excited to come to India and when she comes, ‘Mumbai will be an obvious choice’. “I have never visited India, but I’m sure that I would be fascinated. Judging from my experience with Indian people in the US, I would expect students to be very bright and industrious. I would also love to visit some of the smaller villages in southern India too,” she says.

Talking about Indian students, Marilyn says, “Your (Indians’) reputation in this country is stellar. We always trust the intelligence of your people, and we admire your work ethic.”
Marilyn, the outspoken person that she is, hates the fact when women change their surnames after marriage — something that is common practice in India. “Women should keep their names after marriage and the girl children should share this name and pass it on to their female children,” she ends.
