‘I want to laugh, really laugh!’

As she turns 50 today, the beautiful Dimple Kapadia says she’s ready to take on comedies

The gorgeous auburn-haired Dimple Kapadia turns 50 today, but refreshingly she has no hassles in accepting her age. “The rule of nature applies to everybody and I am no exception” she admits.

The actress says she is extremely content with what she has achieved in life, so much so she doesn’t crave for unnecessary fame and glamour.  “I will now accept only characters with solid substance. I will not just look at my role, but the film in totality,” she adds.

Even at 50, Dimple hates to be called a mere star. She asks, “Why do you call me a star? I am more of an actress first, then a star. A star is limited by style, mannerisms and a particular image. I do not want to have a set image and constrict my acting abilities”.

An ardent fan of Nargis, Nutan and Sadhna, her current favourites include Tabu, Rani Mukherji, Amitabh Bachhan, Nasiruddin Shah and Aamir Khan. “They are very powerful actors,” she says, adding she’d love to work with Dhritiman Chatterjee.

So, what kind of movies would she want to work in today?  “Light-hearted, intelligent comedies; I want to laugh, really laugh. I have done enough of emotions. A comedy is now a real challenge for me”.

Having worked in ‘Antareen’ directed by Mrinal Sen, would she like doing another Bengali film? “Of course I’d like to! But where are the scripts and directors? My only Bengali film ‘Antareen’ was a poor film. I wanted to deliver my own lines in Bengali. Mrinalda dubbed my voice badly. I felt very unhappy”.

However, while she hasn’t been seen too much on the silver screen, Dimple does have a promise for her many, many fans: “Just wait… you will see me in a number of characters, which are realistic and suit me ideally.”
