Amit Trivedi talks about working with director Anurag Kashyap on his upcoming film Manmarziyaan
Manmarziyaan is a quintessentially Amit Trivedi album — edgy (F For Fyaar), soulful (Daryaa), romantic (Sachchi Mohabbat) and groovy (Dhyanchand) all at once. The good ol’ Dev.D or Udta Punjab sound — desi yet modern at the same time — all over again. And the composer has teamed up with Anurag Kashyap again. “As always, it is liberating and exciting to compose for him. The faith and trust he has in me and the freedom to compose is humbling,” Amit avers. He also talks to us about his upcoming works and dealing with failure.
TEAMING UP WITH ANURAG KASHYAP
Whether it was their earlier collaborations together (including Bombay Velvet and a story in Bombay Talkies) or the Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal-starrer, the Lootera composer says his approach to scoring the music has always depended on the brief that he has received from Anurag. “He really gives the direction in which the music needs to move and I just follow that. Also, I get complete freedom to create without boundaries and I’m inspired to create without fear,” he points out.
HITS AND MISSES
Whether Dev.D, Queen, Udta Punjab and now Manmarziyaan, the award-winning music director has given a number of superhit soundtracks. However, there have been a few projects like Pad Man and Bhavesh Joshi that received mixed reactions. “That’s part and parcel of our work,” Amit says about the misses. “It is disappointing when my work isn’t completely successful. I do try to analyse what went wrong. There can be no definite answers for creativity, so I move on and try to do better,” he adds. In any case, Amit states that he is proud of each and every work he has created, whether hit or flop.
UPCOMING PROJECTS
Amit’s upcoming discography includes AndhaDhun, The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir, and Kedarnath. And is anything happening on the non-film music front? “I haven’t had time to think about those,” he says.
CLASSICAL PIECES
AndhaDhun is the story of a blind piano player and some mysterious events in his life that lead to plot twists. About the music direction for the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, Amit says, “The character plays in a cafe. I have created two separate classical pieces for that. The songs have a lot of piano in them since it is the central instrument in the film,” explains the composer. Ayushmann is believed to be singing one of the tracks. The music director is reluctant to reveal if that will be composed by him or will be Ayushmann’s indie track. However, he says about the actor-singer, “He’s a rare combination of a good actor who also sings well.”
