George RR Martin fans have been patiently waiting for the author to finish the sixth novel in A Song of Ice and Fire series on which the hit TV show Game of Thrones is based.
The fifth book, A Dance with Dragons, was published in 2011 and fans of GRRM have been waiting for 7 years now. In July last year, he had teased that a new Westeros book will come out in 2018. He wrote on his Livejournal blog, "I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that's all I care to say. I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018... and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream..."
2018 arrived a month and a half ago, but there was no news of the book or books. But once again, taking to that blog, this time while replying to comments, GRRM said that he is gearing up to publish the first volume of a companion story called Fire Blood.
According to a report by Nerdist, the two-part collection will concentrate on 'fake histories of the Targaryen Kings' from Aegon's Conquest to the regency of boy king Ageon III. Or as the author calls it 'the GRRMarillion' (a wordplay on JRR Tolkien's Silmarillion of the Lord of the Rings novels).
This does not mean he is stalling working on The Winds of Winter. While responding to other comments, Martin said that the sixth instalment of the novel series will come out between the releases of Volumes I and II of Fire and Blood.
TV show Game of Thrones has long bid adieu to the narrative from the books after covering first five books in first five seasons. The showrunners are now shooting for the final season that will release in 2019.
So if GRRM hurries and publishes Fire and Blood, hardcore Game of Thrones fans will have something to hold on to while they wait for the final season and sixth instalment.
