The United Nations Organisation has announced June 21st as World Music Day to commemorate world musicians and celebrate their creativity all across the globe. India is a nation where music thrives in the nerves of the rural and the urban in forms of folk, classical, Bollywood and many other forms of music.

However, today with classical music's connect fading with the youth, dna's web team brings you 5 Hindustani Classical Raags (melodies) that you must listen to to celebrate your cultural legacy on World Music Day. 

1. Raag Hamsadhwani Hamsadhwani is a beautiful raag of the evening. The raag is said to have been borrowed from the Carnatic Music tradition. It is composed into many fusion pieces these days too. It is said to be a very devotional raag.Here is a flute piece in Raag Hamsadhwani by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. The piece is beautiful and will unfailingly brighten the day of non-classical music lovers too.

2. Raag Mian ki MalharThe raag was composed by the great Indian Maestro Tansen. It's said that when he sang the raag, clouds began to pour extemporaneously. This raag is impartially mesmerising even now. Here is a piece in Raag Mian ki Malhaar by the fusion group Advaita.

3. Raag BhopaliRaag Bhopali is a pentatonic raag which means that it's composed of only five notes. Coincidentally, Raag Bhopali's chords are similar to the ones used in Blues music. Its played or sung in early evening. Many Bollywood music compositions are made in Raag Bhopali. This is a 16 beat bandish by Ustad Rashid Khan, its a beautiful and soothing piece.

4. Raag BhairavThe raag gets its name from an incarnation of Lord Shiva- Bhairav. It sounds like the Phrygian mode of the Western Classical tradition. It is a morning raag.Here is a deeply soothing Sarod instrumental by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.  

5. Raag KafiThis is a beautiful raag. Some say it can be sung or played at any time of the day, the rest say its an early evening raag. It's composed with many variations these days. The raag is used to compose bhajans, folk songs and it is specially known for the Holis composed in it. This is a short Sitar instrumental piece in Raag Kafi by Ustad Shujaat Khan with Ustad Zakir Hussain on Tabla.
