‘Dharm’ set to wow Cannes

The Pankaj Kapur-Supriya Pathak starrer ‘Dharm’, a riveting and purposeful art house film about a Hindu Pundit whose belief is suspect by the arrival of a little boy,  is set to be the closing film at the India section of Tous Les Cinemas du Monde at the Cannes International Film Festival 2007. Bhavna Talwar is making her debut as a director with ‘Dharm’.

This is the first time a debut film of an Indian woman director will be showcased at Cannes. 

Bhavna is amongst the new breed of Indian directors, blending Indian story telling and sensitivity with Western technique and style. ‘Dharm’ is a complete anti-thesis of her metro city upbringing. Set in Benaras, the film showcases an India which is unknown to those who have lived in a city. 

Says Bhavna, “While Pankaj plays the role of the Hindu priest, his wife Supriya is playing his reel spouse for the first time in my film ‘Dharm’. The pundit lives his life as per the Vedas, following every ritual and custom set. His world is shaken when the family adopts a baby boy whose mother has abandoned him. The movie traces his dilemmas and predicament when his beliefs are questioned by a turn of events”.

The film is set to release in India this June 2007.
