Veteran filmmaker Dev Anand says that “there might be some similarities,” but his forthcoming film is not based on the Divya Bharati death case. The most promising heroine at that point of time, Divya died on April 5, 1993, when she fell down from the fifth floor of her Versova apartment.

The police closed all investigations in 1998 and ruled out any foul play even though  reports appearing at that point of time suggested that she had alcohol in her blood samples. In the film, actor Divya Dutta apparently plays a popular heroine who’s found dead and surprisingly, the police fail to figure out whether the death was a suicide, accident or murder.

“I don’t know the story of Divya Bharati’s death properly. So, I would not like to comment on whether it is based on her death or not. Everything might be pure coincidence,” says Anand. Divya Dutta’s boyfriend in the film is  a filmmaker.  In the film, Dev Anand re-opens the case and cracks it in the end.

Divya Bharati was 19 years old when she died and had already done 13 films at the time.
