Deepak Dobriyal is in demand. Ace directors Vishal Bharadwaj and Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra have cast him and plan to do so again, and even Kiran Rao is known to have appreciated his work quite a bit. Post Omkara, the actor was flooded with offers but says he refused to jump on the bandwagon because everything that came his way was similar to what he was already noticed for.

“People think I will do any role for money. They come to me with scripts that make me cringe,” states Dobriyal. “I know what I want to do, and I have no issues waiting for things to happen. In fact, I waited for over a year with no new films only to avoid anything that was run-of-the-mill,” he says.

Another strategy Dobriyal believes in is to avoid over exposure. “If I take up each and everything that comes my way, there will be nothing left to show when the right role comes your way. If you encash on stardom before you concentrate on performance, you can’t help but stop growing as an actor. There are very few actors who are able to give stellar performances and maintain stardom,” says Dobriyal.

Ask him which project has won his thumbs up, and Dobriyal has yet another interesting story. “Vishal and Rakeysh are two of my favourite directors who also like me a lot. But it was tough to choose between them. I was offered a role in Bharadwaj’s 7Khoon Maaf, but couldn’t do it due to my commitment towards Rakeysh’s Teen Thay Bhai. They almost fought over me. But I decided to opt for Teen Thay Bhai because the role was more prominent when compared to a rather small one in 7 Khoon Maaf,” says Dobriyal.

While you wait for that one, watch out for this actor in Tanu Weds Manu, that hits the screens today.
