But before the numbers are tallied and laid out for the audiences, you need to understand a few things. There needs to be knowledge about two terms which are prevalent and will be so in all BO articles. Gross figures and nett figures. So don't get confused with different figures being reported everywhere.

Here's the difference. The trade follows a pattern. Every movie gets its revenue from ticket sales. The total amount that is collected from the ticket sales is what the film's gross figure would be. That is always higher than the nett figure. Why? Because the nett figure is the gross figure minus the entertainment tax.

In case of South films, there's very less difference between the gross and nett figures because the entertainment tax down South is negligible. But in its Hindi versions, around 25 percent of the film's collections goes as entertainment tax.

Sample this. So for a film like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, despite earning over Rs 50 crore gross from its ticket sales on Day 1, the producers can only report a BO opening of Rs 40 crore nett because the remaining is entertainment tax, paid to the government.

Ab samjhe? So before you start discussing Baahubali 2's amazing numbers, you need to understand whether it's the gross income or the nett income you're talking about. And not end up making a fool of yourself.
