Veteran film producer Surinder Kapoor, who made films like Ponga Pandit, Woh Saat Din, Pukaar, Loafer and Judaai, passed away on Saturday. Kapoor, who had assisted director K Asif during the making of Mughal-e-Azam, was the father of Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor and actors Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor.

The octogenarian filmmaker had come to Bombay from Peshawar in the early 1950s at the insistence of his distant cousin,n thespian Prithviraj Kapoor, who had already made a name for himself in the film industry. A sales executive at a local newspaper in his hometown, Surinder wanted to try his luck in tinsel town. Surinder received help from Shammi Kapoor and his wife Geeta Bali, who had become good friends with him. His first film Jab Se Tumhe Dekha in 1963 featured Bali and Pradeep Kumar.
