Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha's Phule: Who are real-life revolutionaries Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule?

Born on April 11, 1827, in Maharashtra, Jyotirao Phule was a pioneering social reformer who vehemently opposed the caste system and championed the rights of marginalised communities. In 1873, he founded the Satyashodhak Samaj to promote social equality and combat caste-based discrimination.

Savitribai Phule, born on January 3, 1831, in Naigaon, Maharashtra, broke societal barriers to become India's first female teacher. Alongside her husband, she established the first school for girls in Pune in 1848, laying the foundation for women's education in India.

Together, the Phules opened multiple schools for girls and lower-caste children, challenging societal norms. They also established a shelter for destitute women and advocated for widow remarriage and inter-caste marriages, promoting social justice and equality. 

The Phules faced severe opposition from orthodox society. Savitribai was often subjected to verbal abuse and physical attacks while on her way to teach. Despite these challenges, they remained steadfast in their mission to educate and uplift the oppressed.

The contributions of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule have left an indelible mark on Indian society. Their relentless pursuit of equality and education continues to inspire generations, and their legacy is celebrated through various institutions and commemorations across the country.
