American Factory
This 2019 film, awarded the Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars, 'American Factory', which is the first release from former US President Barack Obama and wife Michelle Obama's production house, Higher Grounds production, is one which chronicles details of what happens to workers when a Chinese billionaire sets up a new factory in Ohio, 'in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant'.
The White Helmets
With Best Documentary Short award at the Oscars in 2017, The White Helmets, available to stream on Netflix, sealed its place as one of a kind watch. Available for viewing on Netflix, the little over 40 mins documentary, set in Aleppo, Syria and Turkey, is about a volunteer rescue search group comprising of three members, who are operating in rebel-held parts of Syria, who train to save the lives of civilians caught in the civil war.
Moonlight
No one can ever forget how the Oscar presenters mixed up the Best Picture award category and declared La La Land as the winner in place of Moonlight. However, the film deservedly did win it in the end.
Directed by Barry Jenkins, this coming-of-age drama available to stream on Amazon Prime, Moonlight, is a story of a young African-American boy Chiron, who grows up poor, black and gay, ultimately finds guidance in Juan, a drug dealer, who teaches him to carve his own path.
