Oscars 2017: 'La La Land' wins 6 awards but 'Moonlight' takes top prize

Oscars 2017: 'La La Land' wins 6 awards but 'Moonlight' takes top prize
La La Land and Moonlight

The 89th Academy Awards ceremony was a long but smooth ride. That is until the last five minutes when everything spiralled out of control. It took a few seconds for the showrunners to put the brakes on and ask 'What just happened?'

Considered a favourite this year, La La Land won in various categories as per expectation. Damien Chazelle's musical took home six trophies, including Best Original Song, Best Score and Best Director. Emma Stone scored an unexpected win as Best Actress. La La Land won Best Film, but that's not the whole story.

Moonlight, considered an underdog despite its critical acclaim and good showing at the recent Film Independent Spirit Awards, won Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, Best Adapted Screenplay and, wait for it, Best Film. You read that right.

An envelope confusion lead to the wrong name being called out for the very last award presented at the show.

The mistake was soon sorted, leaving in its wake a two disoriented film crews, shocked film stars and a mightily confused audience.

Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight -
WINNER

That has got be the biggest faux pas today (ever?) for the Oscars. After accidentally announcing La La Land, it turns out that Moonlight won Best Film. Everyone from the cast and crew of La La Land and Moonlight to us sitting at our desks is not sure what happened. A case mislabeled envelopes?

Warren Beatty apologises. Jimmy Kimmel assumes all responsibility. We're going to get some coffee and process this turnaround.

Congratulations to Moonlight! Maybe there is hope for the Academy after all.

Actress in a leading role

Emma Stone, La La Land - WINNER
Natalie Portman, Jackie
Ruth Negga, Loving
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins
Isabelle Huppert, Elle

That is the upset of the day. For a show that's done the right thing by the big categories this year, this is a bizarre choice. Not because Emma Stone is not good — she delivers a wonderful performance in La La Land — but it doesn't begin to compare with Isabelle Huppert.

10:14 AM

Actor in a leading role

Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea - WINNER
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington, Fences

This is where Hollywood shows its hand. Most press coverage of this award season has conveniently sidestepped sexual harassment allegations against Casey Affleck and the man has won every acting award leading up to the Oscars. This doesn't sit well alongside all the Donald Trump bashing by the top players in Hollywood. The industry has been particularly vocal about its politics this year. Awarding Affleck calls for deeper introspection on its part.

10:03 AM

Director

Denis Villeneuve, Arrival
Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge
Damien Chazelle, La La Land - WINNER
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea

It's hard to not see this coming. Chazelle might be the youngest director to win this award but La La Land has been sweeping prizes since mid-2016. Chazelle is coming off wins for Best Director at the BAFTAs, the Director's Guild Awards, The Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards.
