Bharatanatyam dancer Satyanarayana Raju talks about being a man in the world of classical dance that’s generally perceived to be dominated by women lately…

There is a population of male dancers who are lured by the Western world and its culture for various reasons, some for the opportunities, some for the standards of living. However, I strongly believe that there is a percentage of men who are untouched by the Western influence of any kind. They are staunch patriots when it comes to Indian dance or music.

First of all, classical dance or music is not for all to understand, appreciate or follow. There is a section of people who acquire a taste for this, and though the percentage is small, this percentage of boys is very loyal and happy with the choice of living with the popularity. It may be a minority, but that’s what I term as extraordinary; for it takes a lot to pursue arts, and make a living off it. The ones who take this risk are commendable as they live till the end with their choice and take it to a level of success in their own capacities. The lot that takes to this art is a special section as they follow their heart, and believe in their culture and values and tradition.

Then again, I believe that there is a changed view, more so as there is media today that has taken this to the next level.  However, history clarifies this tradition of men being associated with classical dance. When we think of teachers, or stalwarts who are talked about from the time of the kings and their courts, or in the recent history of the guru shishya tradition, and again the family tree through which classical dance has journeyed and been passed down since generations, it has always been dominated by men. The only distinction to be drawn is if anyone is good, be it man or woman they receive their due and appreciation. Basically, the number of men that take up to the arts and survive with it are few, however the opportunities they receive are proportionate or more than that of their female counterparts.
