Scandal and break ups — as we inch towards the close of 2010, the glamour world here and abroad seems rife with surprise partings. This week, society both in Mumbai and in London, was in for some thunderbolt revelations as Brit tabloids highlighted how the lovely Liz Hurley had supposedly cheated on Mumbai’s very own Arun

Nayar with cricketer Shane Warne. She tweeted, denying all the rumours, saying family and close friends were aware that Arun and she had separated a few months ago. The saga continues to unfold, unfortunately now in the very public domain. Arun’s family here, caught in the uncomfortable glare of the spotlight, besieged with questions from both society and reporters (such is the interest in this particular relationship, stringers and reporters from celebrity/society magazines and tabloids from London and parts of Europe have descended upon Mumbai, attempting to garner any manner of information from all and sundry) have gone underground, and close friends closed ranks, even as attempts are made to further rattle various skeletons out of celebrity cupboards.

Meanwhile Hollywood too had its own share of shock break-up this week — reports of hottie Scarlett Johansson’s split with Ryan Reynolds after only two years of marriage. Apparently they’ve asked for privacy, amidst rumours that Scarlett initiated the separation.

And a little bit of cheer amidst all this gloom in celebrity relationships: the tres romantic official engagement photos of Kate Middleton and Prince William released earlier this week — thankfully not posed and fuddy-duddy as official portraits sometimes tend to be, but relaxed, comfortable and suitably in keeping with the times (read: young!).

And then Hollywood’s evergreen Brad Pitt and his earth mother partner Angelina Jolie reportedly tying the knot (finally!) next year, apparently according to Hindu rites — in Jodhpur, speculation has it. After Katy Perry’s jungle wedding in Rajasthan, Heidi Klum and Seal’s wedding vow renewal in Varanasi, it is now the turn of ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ to be beguiled by the bounty of the East. Of course, all this enchantment with spirituality here has its accidental benefits — just ask the Indian tourism industry!

And finally, a week where Facebook’s founder became Numero Uno on a newsmagazine’s Person of the Year list. This blaze of headlines on the heels of the success of The Social Network, based on the beginnings of Facebook. It is also reported that the 26-year-old millionaire beat an effort by readers of the magazine for embattled WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Right choice?!
