As Uttar Pradesh opens its primary schools today (March 1), the state administration has issued a set of guidelines in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. These guidelines are there to ensure the safety of students of classes 1 to 5 as they resume their regular schooling.

The schools will have to follow regular COVID-19 protocols for the well-being of students like thermal screening, mandatory use of face masks, and enforcing physical distancing. The schools need to make provisions to sanitise the classrooms and make first aid available on the premises.

Here are the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the UP government that need to be followed as the primary schools reopen today:

-The common areas in the schools such as washrooms, laboratories, libraries, and water tanks need to be sanitised.

-Only those students who have their parents' consent can attend classes in schools. Students can continue to attend the classes online.

-The schools need to make sure the availability of medical teams and doctors on the premises for help whenever required.

-The schools need to take care of the seating arrangement as so to enforce physical distancing measures in staff rooms and classrooms all the time. In that regard, only half of the students can attend classes on one day.

-Schools will provide hygienic midday meals. Cooks will have to get a COVID-19 test done before schools reopen and wear a face mask.

-Use of face masks has to be enforced for students, teachers, and non-teaching staff. Students can not be allowed to exchange their masks.

-Schools can not conduct morning assemblies and sports activities in the initial phase of reopening.

-Students showing any COVID-19 symptom would be sent back home.

-It is not compulsory for students to go to school. For parents who do not want to take the risk of sending their wards to schools during the pandemic, online classes are going to continue for the students.
