The government of Assam has taken a major decision regarding the reopening of schools and all other educational institutes in the state, following the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The physical classes for students of senior classes and colleges will resume soon.

The state government approved the reopening of educational institutes in Assam for physical classes from the higher secondary to post-graduate level. The educational institutes are set to reopen from the first week of September, as per media reports.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced that Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has approved the reopening of educational institutes and resumption of physical classes for the students in Class 12, undergraduate final year, and postgraduate final year.

As per media reports, the education minister said, “In view of this, vaccination camp for Covid-19 will be held at the offices of Block Elementary Education Officer, District Elementary Education Officer, Inspector of Schools and all University campus from tomorrow (August 27) up to September 5 for vaccination of teachers, non-teaching staff and students above 18 years. For attending classes, 1st dose of the Covid-19 vaccine will be mandatory.”

Rajon Pegu further said that in order to reopen the hostels, all the occupants will be required to take both doses of the vaccine. Students will also have to follow the COVID-19 safety norms issued by the Assam government in this regard when they start sitting for physical classes.

The education minister has further announced that the standard operating procedures for the reopening of educational institutes in Assam will be issued by the state government by August 31, after which all the educational institutes will be issuing their schedule for conducting offline classes.

Students across Assam have been attending online classes since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in March 2020. The educational institutes were reopened briefly towards the end of the year but were shut down once again due to the second wave of the pandemic.

Many parents are still concerned about the reopening of schools as many experts have said that the third wave of the pandemic is set to hit the country in October this year.
