Nearly 400 students, pursuing a diploma in Architecture, have been left in the lurch as they become a victim of the sudden rule change by the Council of Architecture for appearing for the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA).

As per a recent notification of NATA, declaring the examination dates and eligibility criteria, only class 12 students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics can appear for the exam to seek admission in a degree college of architecture.

With the new rule, close to 5,000 diploma students in Gujarat and many more across the country have been affected. The students staged a protest on Monday afternoon.

Sharing her plight, Deeya Thakar, one of the affected student said, "We took admission in diploma so that we can convert the same in degree after two years. Last year a rule came that made Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics mandatory for us but this year, we have learnt that even if we have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, we will not be eligible for NATA. We have written to the education department here and other authorities but there is no response." She added, "The NATA notification said that while we can provisionally appear for the exam, the result will be declared valid subject to fulfilling the above criteria." There are close to 15000 students across the country who are affected by this decision of which close to 5000 are from Gujarat.

The Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) has made representation to the Council of Architecture in a letter, requesting them to consider the current batch. Confirming the same, GP Vadodaria, Member secretary, ACPC said, "These students took admission in diploma after class 10 thinking that they can then opt for a degree course. We have requested the authorities to continue with the same norms as the students future will be affected. While we have not received any official reply from them, but the same has been written by all states and we hope that their response is positive."

Ushma Anerao, Principal, Government Polytechnic for Girls said, "We have got reviews from colleges saying that quality of students who take admission in degree after diploma versus freshers is very different."
