Third-year engineering students under the University of Mumbai were in for a shock on Wednesday as the question paper on 'Data Mining and Business Intelligence' had more than 50% of the questions from the old syllabus which has been scrapped for over 4 years now.

As the examination began at 3 pm on Wednesday across several centres, students pursuing IT engineering were shocked to see that the paper given to them was of 100 marks instead of 80. After college authorities brought it to the notice of the varsity, students were later asked to attempt the paper only for 80 marks.

Students later found out that more than 50% of the questions in the paper were from the old syllabus which was revised in 2014 by the varsity. "It was shocking to see that most questions were out of our current syllabus. We somehow wrote the paper but most of us are scared of losing our marks due to the varsity's error" said an engineering student from Navi Mumbai.

Several students wrote to the varsity asking for compensatory marks to those who attempted those questions. "We do not want a re-exam for the university is at fault. The university should grant us marks for all the wrong questions," said another student from a city college.

Vinod Malale, Deputy Registrar(PR) at the Examination Section of the University said, "The university has received a complaint from the students. The case has been referred to the Dean, Technology and a decision is expected soon."
