You may plan your life, but life will become even more unpredictable for you. Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer Gunjan Singh, hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district, found precisely this to be true.

When she was accepted into IIT Roorkee after school, she had everything clearly planned out in front of her. But an opportunity to intern in a community and learn about country life and challenges changed her path. This experience inspired her to take up the Civil Services Examination and make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged and poor.

Gunjan got a job at a good company after graduation but soon she decided it was time to leave her work and study to crack the UPSC examination. Gunjan was completely focused on her academics, yet she failed the prelims for the civil services exam in her first attempt.

In her second attempt, she performed admirably and even proceeded to the interview round, but she was unable to make the final list. In spite of failing twice, Gunjan persisted in preparing anyway for the Civil Services Examination. Ultimately, in 2019, she passed one of the most difficult examinations in the country in her third attempt, placing 16th overall.

Talking to a Hindi daily, Gunjan recently said that she attributes her failing to lack of hard work somewhere along the way. She believes her lower scores in the Mains were a result of not practising answer writing in the second attempt.

Nevertheless, determination and continuous effort always pay off. Gunjan Singh learnt from her mistakes and improved as she progressed in her career. She acknowledges that she attained success in life as a result of support and company. Singh credits her mother, who was there for her at every step of the way during this challenging time.

Gunjan feels that everyone should develop a strong and unique approach for the Civil Services Examination, a plan which is based on their personal needs. As per her, if you prepare without a strategy, you will have less time and will not be able to cover the entire curriculum. Along with studying, it's absolutely essential to stay motivated during the preparation process and to learn from your failures.
