In big news for students, Delhi University (DU) is once again going to have a four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) as a result of aligning its courses with the New Education Policy (2020). A committee suggested that the BA programme can now be called a four-year BA Honours at the central university.

The students at DU will be able to go for a four-year undergraduate programme, in which the last year would be reserved for dissertation and multi-disciplinary research studies. The four-year course would have additional subjects for students and they would have to pursue an interdisciplinary course on 'social and emotional learning' for their health and well-being, as suggested by the NEP Implementation Committee (NIC).

A language and literature course would require students to study two language and literature subjects, and one of these would have to be in an Indian language. Another course on ethics and culture in the new curriculum would require experience in community service. The provision of credit transfer in both national and international arenas would be available too.

The NIC has met as many as 18 times since October 8 as it has been tasked with preparing this new multi-disciplinary programme. It is required to be able to build capacity, create employment and engagement with society and industry, and enhance the prospects of students from socially and economically disadvantaged communities as well as disabled students.

The university is slated to bring changes to its BA courses. While the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Programme will be known as Bachelors of Arts (Honours) in Humanities and Social Sciences, the Bachelors of Commerce (BCom) programme will be called Bachelors of Commerce Studies (Honours). Similarly, the Bachelors of Science in Physical Sciences/Life Sciences/Mathematical Sciences programme will be referred to as Bachelors of Science (Honours) in the particular field of study.

Some have suggested that the new changes under the NEP were similar to those that were brought in previously under the FYUP.
