The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday postponed ongoing board examinations of class 10, 12 till March 31 in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

"All ongoing CBSE examinations in India and abroad postponed till March 31 and will be rescheduled thereafter... After an assessment of the situation," CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi said in a press release.

"All ongoing evaluation work will be suspended during the period," he added.

The announcement came following a Ministry of Human Resource Development order that directed the CBSE and all educational institutions in the country to postpone exams till March 31 in view of the COVID-19 scare.

The decision, the MHRD said, was taken keeping in mind the safety and security of students and teachers.

"While maintenance of academic calendar and exam schedule is important, equally important is safety and security of students who are appearing in various examinations as also of their teachers and parents," HRD secretary Amit Khare said in an official communication.

"All the ongoing examinations, including CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education)board exams, be postponed till March 31 and rescheduled thereafter," he added.

The measures are required to be taken by all the educational institutions and examinations board under the ministry, the order said.

Keeping in view that rescheduled board exams may clash with JEE(Main) which may also require aspirants to travel, the dates of the engineering entrance exam will also be rescheduled.

It was earlier scheduled to take place on April 5, 7, 9 and 11.
