A high-level meeting was chaired by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday, to discuss the conduct of CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 and entrance examinations for professional courses including JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and NEET.

Reports suggest that the meeting is over without any consensus. No final decision regarding the conduct of Class 12 board exams has been taken yet.

The government had proposed two options – one to hold exams for only limited subjects and two to hold exams for all subjects but reduce the time for each exam from 3 hours to 1.5 hours and change questions to MCQ and short questions type only.

While all states opted for the first option, the Delhi government voiced the cancellation of the exams. However, the CBSE is likely to hold the Class 12 board exam 2021. The dates for the same are yet to be finalised.

Some states including Tamil Nadu said that they will hold a written exam as per either of the two options as and when the situation is conducive, while other states including Maharashtra and Delhi are against holding exams at all and want students to be assessed based on internal assessment.

While Chhattisgarh has decided to hold exams from home for class 12 students, Assam Education Minister Ranuj Pegu who attended today's meeting told CNN News18, "The meeting was very positive and we are hoping for a synchronized effort for everyone keeping the interest of students in mind, however, we are hopeful that a similar model should opt for both state and Central level board exams so that a level playing field is available for all students."

Some states also demanded to give students options of appearing for exams at a later stage and declaring it a zero exam year. There is a lack of consensus among states but a decision from the center is expected soon.

CBSE had earlier suggested conducting the class 12 exam only for major subjects in the home centre (Own schools) or at the exam centres.

According to sources, the report of today's meeting will be shared with the Prime Minister's Office. Another meeting will be held on May 30 to take a decision on the same. CBSE too will be doing a review as scheduled on June 1 to check the feasibility of holding the examinations.

The meeting was attended by Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, and education ministers of states and UTs along with senior officers from the education department and CBSE officials.
