A backgrounder on the chief minister of Bihar
The Bihar chief minister was born in Bakhtiyarpur, Patna, in a Kurmi (Hindu agricultural community) family.
He has a degree in electrical engineering from the Bihar College of Engineering, Patna, which is now known as the National Institute of Technology. Before moving to politics, he had joined the Bihar State Electricity Board.
Nitish prefers simple homemade food, and is a teetotaler and non-smoker.
He is best known for setting the standards high during his tenure as the Union minister for railways (1998-2004).
During his current term as the chief minister of Bihar, he has been felicitated with awards like The Best Politician of the Year and The Business Reformer of the Year, among others.
