According to the police, the accident took place near the Moti Bagh flyover in south Delhi on Saturday evening. Ranjit Kaur, 50, was riding pillion while her daughter Navnit Kaur, 22, was riding the scooter.

The two had started from Govindpuri and were headed towards Vishnu Garden in west Delhi. When they reached near the Moti Bagh flyover, a rashly driven Maruti Eco car hit them from behind. The impact was such that the two fell on ground. The driver of the car left his belongings and the car at the scene and fled.

The injured were rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre, where Ranjit succumbed to her injuries while Navnit is undergoing treatment.

A relative of the family said the police have seized the vehicle. "The driver left the car and other things, including his mobile phone, behind. The police are tracing the driver through that. Navnit has sustained injuries on her face, hands, and legs," she added.

"We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death against the accused, who is currently absconding," a police officer said.
