The closing of 2018 will mark the completion of Delhi Metro's Phase III. The Metro will expand into three new corridors, chugging 50 km into total length, opening all of them one after the other by December 31.

The three corridors that are scheduled to be opened include Pink Line's 9.7-km stretch connecting Lajpat Nagar to Mayur Vihar Pocket 1, Red Line extension of 9.4-km from Dilshad Garden to New Bus Adda extension of the Red Line and the 29.7-km long Aqua Line of Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC).

The Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 corridor will boost connectivity between prominent shopping hubs in south Delhi such as Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, INA and South Extension and east Delhi.

It will also make Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station more accessible, besides offering an interchange at Mayur Vihar I, connecting Pink and Blue lines. With completion of this route, the entire Pink Line will be 59 km long.

Meanwhile, the Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section of the Red Line scheduled to get functional by the month end will be Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's second foray into Ghaziabad after Vaishali. The line will connect peripheral and interior parts of the city, passing through Sahibabad Industrial Area. According to DMRC Executive Director Anuj Dayal construction of this corridor was a major challenge, given its location running parallel to the busy GT Road. Hence, the girders had to be launched at night time which slowed down the speed of construction.

The third corridor, Aqua Line, will connect Greater Noida to the metro network. However, commuters will have to change trains and buy separate tickets to use both the networks.

According to the DMRC, trials are currently taking place at all the three stretches. The DMRC will soon send letters papers to the commissioner of metro rail safety inviting him to inspect the lines.
