"Many vendors had set up temporary structures on the footpaths where they were also residing. A number of illegally parked vehicles were also seized," said a senior NDMC official.

The South civic body, too, seized 43 vehicles during the encroachment drive in and around popular markets, including Kailash Colony Market, M-block Market, Archana Cinema and Satya Niketan, among others.

"Complying with the instructions of the special task force, an anti-encroachment drive was undertaken at Shastri Market Moti Bagh, Satya Niketan to Gurudwara Road, from Archna Cinema to N and M Block markets and near Kailash Colony Market. During the action, 63 articles and nine vehicles have been seized, and 23 temporary structures have been demolished. Encroachments from both sides of roads have been removed," said a senior South Corporation officer.

The 13-member Special Task Force had submitted an action-taken report in the Supreme Court on May 15.

The Special Task Force, which was created on directions of the Supreme Court on April 25, is now officially working under the Monitoring Committee tasked with sealing premises not in conformity with the Delhi Master Plan-2021.

However, the street vendors claimed they were a harassed lot who are being snatched of their livelihoods and have no other means of income.
