South Delhi Municipal Corporation hires 22 more water tankers to curb pollution

The civic body also directed public sector firm NBCC to immediately stop all construction and demolition activities of Pragati Maidan project

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has intensified its war against alarming air pollution levels by hiring 22 additional water tankers for water sprinkling, on Sunday. With this the corporation now has 62 for this purpose. The civic body also directed public sector firm NBCC to immediately stop all construction and demolition activities of Pragati Maidan project. It also reminded the firm to follow the National Green Tribunal guidelines set for the construction firm.

The Commissioner, Dr Puneet Kumar Goel on Sunday stated that SDMC has also stared ground level monitoring on a continuous basis to ensure that a common object to reduce pollution level is achieved and air quality does not deteriorates further. He added that SDMC is committed to strictly enforce the directions of the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) including instructions received on Saturday; the concerted action is the need of the hour to save citizens including children and aged to get affected by the alarming pollution levels.

The SDMC has told in plain words to NBCC/ Shapoorji Pallonji, working on Pragati Maidan, to immediately stop all construction/ demolition activities at site or face the music under DMC Act 1957. A communication has been issued to stop construction activities as NBCC ignored earlier request to this regard and NGT's guidelines.

The civic body swung into action even before a fresh communication was received from the Chairman, CPCA to implement the action listed in the very poor quality of GAP and over and above the listed actions in the moderate to poor category during 15th October. The recent relevant instructions for SDMC includes increasing the frequency of mechanized cleaning of roads, encourage providing electric heaters to security stall to avoid burning in open to contain the effect of winter, advise people affected with respiratory problems to stay from the polluted places and stop use of DG sets.
