In an attempt to attract more visitors to the Delhi National Zoological Park, the zoo authorities have decided to celebrate birthdays of animals born in the premises.

A naming ceremony for these animals will also be held.

For the birthday celebration, the zoo authorities have decided to invite schoolchildren and cut cakes.

The kids will be invited to play games and name the newborns.

The Lucknow Zoo first started this tradition of celebrating birthdays of animals there.

Speaking about the matter, the zoo officials said it was important to treat these animals like family members and to show their importance to young children. That is why the birthdays were being celebrated.

After being shut for 84 days last year due to a flu, which led to the death of several birds in the premises, the Delhi Zoo has been coming up with several plans to attract the visitors again.

The authorities have also made it public that they will soon start a toy train service, which was once a famous attraction at the facility but was stopped.

The zoo even had a nocturnal house. The authorities are now looking for a major revival and plan to bring in interpretation centres as well.

In addition, the officials are looking for mates for already existing animals, who have lost their mates over time.

For instance, the African elephant at the zoo has been alone for several years now, and had attacked its caretaker once.

The Delhi Zoo is the only such park being run by the Union Ministry, and operates on the basis of exchange programmes. It houses rare species of animals, such as Sangai deer, one-horned rhinoceros, and so on, and has also been running successful breeding programmes.
