Son held for murder of parents in South East Delhi

It was a heady cocktail of passion and alcohol that drove 26-year-old Abdul Rehman to commit parricide in the most brutal manner. What looked like a story straight out of crime thriller, the accused meticulously planned the murder of his parents, involving his friends to get married to his girlfriend and siphon off the victims' money to fund his drug addiction.

Rehman was arrested for his involvement in the murders of his parents Shamim Ahmed and Taslim Bano with the help of two other associates on April 28 in South East Delhi's Jamia Nagar area. The police also arrested one of his associates Nadeem Khan from Nangloi and are looking for the other named Guddu.

According to the police, on the night of the incident, the door was found locked from inside the house and the dead bodies were found lying on the floor. All the belongings of the house including cash worth Rs 5.25 lakh and some jewellery were found untouched.

"It was the son who informed the neighbours and relatives about the deaths. When we interrogated him, he pretended to be unaware of the murders and acted very cool," said an official from the Jamia Nagar Police Station.

The police then set up a team and intensified the investigation through rounds of interrogations of neighbours and relatives of the dead couple including the son. They also checked footages of CCTV cameras in the area and used electronic surveillance to crack the case.

"After few days of investigation, we found some inconsistencies in the statements of the son. We had received the post-mortem report by then which stated the cause of the deaths to be 'asphyxia due to smothering'. Being suspicious, we subjected the son to rigorous interrogation again," said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP, South East District.

On repeated interrogation, the son finally confessed to his involvement in the murders and revealed that he had promised cash of Rs 2.5 lakh each to two of his associates to commit the crime.

"Rehman also told us that he was a drug addict and had been in a relationship with a girl from Kanpur for more than a year. He had committed the murders to acquire his parents' money to bear his expenses of his girlfriend and fund his drug addiction," the police said.
