Sex worker rescued from GB Road

A sex worker was rescued from GB Road's red-light area in Delhi after her lover filed a complaint of her captivity.

Swati (name changed), 27, had been at a brothel at GB Road for the last five years when she came from Nepal. She was looking for work in the national capital but ended up working as a sex worker.

Two years back, Pradeep (name changed) got in touch with Swati and fell in love with her, while she continued to work at the brothel. They had regular meetings and he then decided to marry her.

In order to get her out from the place, Pradeep contacted the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) for help.

A team of DCW members, Shaktivahini NGO members, and some local policemen visited the brothel to rescue the woman. The girl has been freed and is currently living with her lover. "There is a huge nexus of traffickers operating in GB road who take advantage of girls in distress. I have serious concerns and demand that it should be closed down," said Swati Maliwal, DCW Chairperson.

There are over 5,000 sex workers in almost 90 brothels living in GB Road, making it one of the most notorious areas in the city. Most of these girls come from different parts of the city, and from neighbouring countries looking for better jobs, when they are lured here.
