Rise in vector-borne disease cases in the National Capital

At least 25 fresh cases of Malaria and 30 cases of Dengue were reported by the various MCDs in Delhi last week, thus taking the total count of people affected by the diseases in 2018 to 195 and 137, respectively. The total number of cases of Chikungunya, however, reported till September 8, is 47.

Overall, all the cases for the three diseases have gone down as compared to 2017 where dengue and malaria were 4,726 and 577, respectively by this time last year whereas Chikungunya was 259 last year and 47 this year.

Doctors and authorities fear that the cases will rise as the rainfall continues in the coming days. As per the MeT department, there will be showers in the coming few days leading to more cases of these vector-borne diseases. While Dengue Malaria is showing a significant rise, chikungunya cases dropped from 19 to nine.

Of the 1,23,629 legal notices issued in Delhi in 2018 for the mosquitogenic condition so far, 49,133 are for South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) alone and 35,919 and 38,577 are for North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), respectively. A total of 62,299 houses were found positive for mosquito breeding in SDMC region, while 40,080 and 38,570 for NDMC and EDMC, respectively.

Apart from the vector-borne diseases, the national Capital is currently are grappling with rising number of cases of the vector-borne diseases because of the rains in the past few days. Many are falling sick off viral fevers thus leading to increased visits at the hospitals.

"There is definitely rise in the Malaria and Dengue cases as compared to last month but the situation is definitely better than last year," says Dr SP Byotra, Head of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. "It is strongly suggested to keep the surroundings dry and free from mosquito breeding zones, we do not need another epidemic," he adds.

A senior north corporation official had said that the civic body has taken measures to prevent mosquito breeding and creating awareness by using various media, deploying more dengue breeding checkers to check breeding and desilting of drains to avoid water-logging.

On June 28, L-G Anil Baijal had directed local bodies and other agencies to intensify vector-control measures.
