Rains, water-logged roads bring traffic to a halt in Delhi-NCR

Heavy and incessant rain lashed the national Capital and adjoining cities including, Gurugram and Noida which was severely hit due to waterlogging. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 35.9 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. According to the weatherman, rains will be intense till mid-week, bringing the mercury further down. The month of August received above-normal rainfall and rain activity has been widespread since the beginning of September.

The national Capital and its neighbouring cities were deluged with water as heavy rain pounded Delhi, Noida and Gurugram on Monday morning. Many parts of the city reported waterlogging and traffic snarls for the third consecutive day, as it continued to rain way past afternoon.

Commuters in Delhi and Noida faced a harrowing time in reaching their destinations in the morning as flooded roads slowed down traffic considerably at major junctions. Bumper-to-bumper jams were reported from Laxmi Nagar, Geeta Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Patparganj, Mayur Vihar, Old Delhi Railway Station, Dhaula Kuan, Rajouri Garden, Yusuf Sarai among others. The Delhi Traffic Police put out regular updates of traffic jams, warning drivers to avoid jams. People faced inconvenience in other parts of the city too like Mundka, Tikri Border, Pul Prahladpur, Ring Road, Punjabi Bagh, Saket, Chirag Dilli, South Extension. Delhiites lashed out at the state government and Municipal Corporation Delhi for not cleaning drains to facilitate water seepage. "We are stranded on road with kilometre-long jam. This is the third day when we are facing so much inconvenience. The government is simply not bothered about what its citizens go through," said Ojasvini Kulahria, a resident of Patparganj.

In Noida, key junctions like Rajnigandha Chowk in Sector 16, Film City, Sector 18, Sector 37, Noida City Centre, Sector 72, Sector 70 were some of the areas that were severely waterlogged. Cars and other vehicles had to wade through knee-deep water to reach their destinations. People took to social media to vent their anger against the poor civic infrastructure. A lot of people tweeted pictures of cars breaking down in the middle of the road. Surabhi Saxena, a lawyer in local court said, "We are living in the medieval age. There is no drainage system. I was stuck in Sector 16 for more than 45 minutes because of snarls and flooded roads."

People faced similar woes on Sunday as heavy rain caused waterlogging in several parts. Prominent roads in Delhi such as the Ring Road, Dhaula Kuan, Minto Road, Outer Ring Road near Munirka, Rohtak Road, faced severe waterlogging on Sunday. Places like Modi Mill, South Avenue, Bhairon Marg, Lajpat Nagar market, Kela Ghat and Kashmiri Gate were also flooded with water. Patel Nagar Metro station, Lajpat Nagar Metro station, Minto bridge, Guru Nanak Chowk at JLN Marg, Kondli and Dallapura T-point, Dilshad Garden were other areas where people suffered due to waterlogging.
