To his way to lay the foundation stone for an international trade centre in Dwarka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a ride in Delhi Metro`s Airport Express Line on Thursday. He made a return journey from Dhaula Kuan to Dwarka and back.

"Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi travelled in Delhi Metro`s Airport Express Line today (Thursday). He boarded the Metro train at Dhaula Kuan Metro station at 3.13 p.m and travelled up to Dwarka Sector-21 Metro station, leaving the station at 3.27 p.m," an official from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said. The official said the ride was completed in 18 minutes.

He also travelled back from Dwarka Sec-21 to Dhaula Kuan station in the Metro, boarding at 4:39 pm and deboarding at 4:54 pm, the official said.

In the train, people were surprised to see him and the prime minister obliged many passengers as they took selfies with him.

The PM travelled to Dwarka for foundation laying ceremony of India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC) which will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 25,700 crore.

This is not the first time PM Modi has used Metro to reach distant venues to avoid traffic jams which occur during VVIP movement. In July, he along with South Korean President Moon Jae-in took a ride in Metro ahead of their visit to the Samsung plant in Noida.

Commoners were surprised to see the two leaders in the metro as they waved to them and even posed for selfies. This was also not the first time when PM Modi took a foreign dignitary on a metro ride.

In April last year, PM Modi took a ride in Delhi Metro with his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull. Before that, French President Francois Hollande also boarded Metro for a ride while on his visit to the country in 2016.
