Over 33K people held by Delhi Police for consuming liquor at public place

In order to curb the menace of people consuming alcohol at public places, the Delhi Police in the year 2018 took stringent action leading to almost a 50% rise in the number of people arrested. Similarly, the consumption of smack, heroine, weed etc also saw a rise in the number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) ie of almost 36%.
According to the police, they arrested 23,094 people for liquor consumption at public places in 2017 while the number increased to 33,873 in 2018.
Police said that after consuming alcohol, people loose their sense which often lead to fight between two groups and road rage also.
In 2017, the number of cases under NDPS act were 362 which jumped to 493 in 2018.
“662 people have been arrested under NDPS act in 2018 while 491 people were arrested in 2017. We can see that the drugs are more procured by the youngsters. We are carrying out campaigns and trying to curb the selling of drugs,” said an officer.
